I sang that song regularly as a bedtime song to my girls, and I still occasionally sing it on the school bus or to my grandsons.
I don't know what it is about that song, but it makes me cry. I am probably overly sentimental or I let my imagination run wild to think that a make-believe dragon could be broken-hearted.
I cry when they get to the part where "Jackie Paper came no more, and Puff that Mighty Dragon, he ceased his fearless roar!"

i used to sing this song to my son on the guitar when he was still a little boy. the first time he heard me sang it, he cried, too, when jackie paper came no more. my two grandsons, his sons, loved the song, too, but wouldn't finish it because they said it made them sad. i've always thought that no matter how pleasant the beat of the song, it is actually a very sad one.
i like the smile on that dragon's face; it's like he's up to some mischief! aces!
@summerfield
So good to know that I am not the only one that cries with that song.
I like that song because it teaches us loyalty. Puff would remain if we do not grow up and abandon him
@farmreporter - my other interpretation of that song is that our children will someday grow up and go on their own and we as parents would have to let them go. and that brat of a son has not called me in a long time. i might have to change my will! 🤣
