during dinner at mike schofield's london home, he and richard pratt, a frequent visitor, make a bet: that pratt wouldn't be able to guess the rare claret being served that night. schofield is very sure of that fact that he is willing to bet his young daughter's hand in marriage, should pratt wins.
pratt tastes the claret, takes his time as he swirls it around his glass, anticipation builds. when he finally gives schofield the right answer, schofield, his wife and daughter are rather shocked. pratt wallows in his victory when the housekeeper appears and holds out to pratt a pair of eyeglasses.
"i believe these are yours, sir!" she says, but pratt waves her away and ignores her.
the housekeeper, who has been in the service of the schofields for many years, does not leave and continues to stand beside pratt. "you left them on top of the green filing cabinet in mr. schofield's study, sir," she says firmly, "when you happened to go in there by yourself before dinner."
which is just where pratt, on previous visits, has advised schofield, is the perfect place to leave his wines to "breathe" and acquire room temperature.
