Why the background is black I have no idea but It makes for an interesting picture.

Beautiful, I have the self same camera and can never achieve a black background except by falsehood and fakery! Wish you knew how you did it!!

Probably due to the auto aperture settings making the background dark? Agreed it makes the rose stand out more.
