old master - a very still life by graemestevens

old master - a very still life

The star of this show is the "new" skull that has been cold water macerating for the last 4 weeks and finally got cleaned off this morning. Somewhat surprisingly it came out with teeth and all for a change - this is (was?) the seal that I discovered dead on the beach some time ago. This shot also took a long, long time to get as I had to wait for a suitable fly to land in a suitable place. After a couple of hours waiting I placed a small bowl of shrimp paste behind the skull to attract them and viola, one fly.
Nice sill life!

Amazing in arrangement and lightening. And I love the fly :)

without really seeing what it was, as I was skipping about here, I knew it was yours
it is a cool still life
October 20th, 2016
A fine arrangement... pushing the boundaries of the genre! Love that fly! The trouble you go to for your art! I may have to fav it!

"God in his wisdom created the fly but, then forgot to tell us why."-Ogden Nash. Just seemed to fit.
October 20th, 2016
Fabulous!
October 20th, 2016
@joysabin Oh, so fab. I love Ogden Nash. :) On a photographic note, this has the portrait feel of the old masters, with a bite.

October 20th, 2016
Ok I have to admit I fav'd it not only for the photo (awesome) but the text just ... I can't even... I just had to fav. That's an impressive hobby, Mr. Stevens. I'm surprised you don't have more human skulls to be honest.
October 20th, 2016
@kerosene Somewhat surprisingly it's quite difficult to get a human skull...
October 20th, 2016
@graemestevens judging by your work here, surely you've been able to extract one out of someone by now! (I won't tell)
October 20th, 2016
@kerosene I should be so lucky - apparently it's frowned upon, which to me translates as "go ahead (pun intended), help yourself"...it's finding a willing donor that I'm struggling with
October 20th, 2016
Great setup... a very different 'Still life'...
October 20th, 2016
Oh wow, gotta fav this.
October 20th, 2016
@golftragic Thank you very much :)
@julzmaioro Thank you kindly...like I'd go and do something ordinary...
October 20th, 2016
Very cool. I love the tones, the light, that awesome toothy skull and of course, Louie the fly.
October 20th, 2016
@katrinanz Thank you very much - I think I spent just shy of two hours waiting for him to show up and be in just the right place.
October 20th, 2016
Very different but still very you... you've caught the style of the Old Masters rather well.

October 20th, 2016
@zabcoloma Thank you very much :)
@vignouse Thank you very much - I've always admired the old masters anyway so while it's an attempt it's a rather pale imitation
