Whiskey Shot

Ever heard of Wild Turkey? As I was leaving the school I volunteer at every Thursday I saw three of these in someone's yard. I almost wrecked my truck trying to get stopped in a driveway so I could whip out my camera and take a few shots!
That is a big turkey! I'm glad that you didn't wreck.

Wow! That is quite the bird! What is that thing hanging from the chest!?

@tara11 Thanks, Tara! i am really bad about slamming on my brakes for a shot and THEN looking in the mirror to see if anyone is behind me!

@vskolnik Thanks, Vee! Not exactly the cute ones that you shoot, eh? That is called a beard. when I saw it I though it was a feather coming out of him so I was trying to get a shot without it but my husband says it is a desirable part to catch in a photo.

Wow!....it looks like a small pony tail!

Nice shot of him, and I have been seeing so many of these wild birds around here this year.

@vskolnik I know ! it is called a beard and can get as long as 12". It is composed of a different kind of feather than the rest of ones on his body

@digitalrn Thanks! this is my first sighting in years and it was in the "city"

I hope I haven't eaten a turkey that had a beard!

I've seen quite a few of these near the Wichita Mountain Wildlife refuge I like to go hiking at. They are super skiddish normally so it would be unusual to see them in the city.

Nice shot. I have tried but missed several attempts at getting pictures of wild turkeys. Guess I need to hit the brakes a little quicker :).

A wild turkey is a fantastic get! WTG!

Eyes wide open, never miss a shot!! Great capture and I love that beard!
January 11th, 2013
It's just what I'm drinking right now
January 11th, 2013
yup, had one in our backyard earlier this year & we live in the center of a city! great capture.

Amazing bird and shot!!! i immediately thought beard then though...BUT it's a turkey and it's growing out of his chest!!! I think other Lebanese drivers are relieved I'm at home today after much sudden unexpected stopping and slamming on of brakes yesterday!!
January 11th, 2013
Funny place for a beard to grow!! Good catch and great focus!
January 11th, 2013
@deburahiru They appear more on toms than hens so if you only eat hens you are probably safe! ;~}

@jwlynn64 When I say "city" I mean in a neighborhood in my small town. I agree with you it is rather unusual, but I have also seen deer, o'possum and raccoons. Our "city" has lots of wooded areas in it!

@jlshultz Thanks, James! LoL! I just got lucky!
January 11th, 2013
@swguevin Gee, Thanks!
January 11th, 2013
@judithdeacon Thanks, Judith! It was a lucky moment but I am always looking ........more than paying attention to my driving probably!
January 11th, 2013
@peterdegraaff I think you are the only one who got that, Peter! Wish I was there with you!
January 11th, 2013
@mhatch Thanks, Mark! i am glad someone else understands how that is possible!
January 11th, 2013
@ruthmouch THANKS!! See how smart you are? I Thought it was a flaw!
I had to laugh about your driving comment because what you described how I drive to a T when I am in photography mode! I really need a driver!
January 11th, 2013
@onie I agree totally! Thanks so much, Onie!

I love your commentary and this shot, Katy. What a huge turkey and glad you did not wreck your truck.

The “beard” of a turkey hangs down from the middle of the turkey’s chest. It doesn’t hang down from the turkey’s chin. Though that would be cool if it did. It looks like a long, skinny, long-haired tail. Like the tail of a horse if the horse were as big as a miniature poodle and the tail were on the front, not the back. Scientists call the “hairs” of the beard “bristles” or “mesofiloplumes” (“MEZ-uh-FILL-uh-ploomz”) — stiff, feather-like structures.

@darsphotos LOL! thanks, Darlene! I was really excited to see it!

@prn Thanks!

Had to laugh at your driving technique. I tend to do the same thing, although I TRY to be very mindful of traffic. I miss a lot of shots because there is no quick place to stop.
Glad you were able to catch this guy. He's not the prettiest fellow, but it's a great shot and I like the composition too. :-)

@pasadenarose I'm glad you enjoyed my story! Thanks for the nice commnents about the shot too! ;~}
