I think I have figured out why we have so few pears this year. I watched him and his siblings strip our mulberry tree earlier in the Spring and saw this today underneath our pear tree! Canning pears is overrated and so much work anyway.
This is the same reason we have so few chestnuts on the chestnut tree this year!

better the squirrels than the stink bugs, which decimated the local guy's pears here...but left them on the tree looking like they were ok.

@claireuk No. he is a grey squirrel. I am not sure where red squirrels live but we don't see them here in Alabama.
