Throughout the string portion of the piano can be found this cotton twill tape and/or the blue felt between the bridge (on the left) and hitch pins (on the right). The "parts of the strings that are outside of the speaking length and not intended to vibrate are damped by pieces of felt" or in this case cotton twill tape too. It keeps the strings from vibrating in sympathy thereby distorting the sound.

I don't think I ever really thought about sympathy vibrations etc. even when I did play piano- so this has been a fun bit of information to learn thanks to your 30 day series! I like the viewpoint on this shot. Good one!
