Chainstitch Contrails

I started out with the picture of the plane that was leaving the contrail in the sky but as I watched it became this unusual shape. This was much more interesting that the plane. I don't think I have ever seen one before that wasn't straight. It reminded me of the first row of a crochet project

It does look like crochet stitching. I wonder what kind of atmospheric condition would create that.
