Construction on the Berlin Wall began in 1961 and until 1989 there were two Germanies, East Germany and West Germany. My friend lived in West Germany whose husband was stationed there. She sent me this vase sometime between 1984 and 1986. It notes it was made in W. Germany which no longer exists
They were strange times indeed. My mother-in-law was from West Germany and was separated from a large part of her family when the wall went up. We have a couple of pieces like yours that were hers. I love the white on the solid black. It looks even better on black.
Things have changed so much and so many times. Whether or not it's special in general because it was made in West Germany, it's special to you and that's the important thing. It does look nice contrasting with the black background.
That is a special piece of history both in the realm of world politics and in your personal family history! I still remember when the wall was dismantled- what a day that was! Good shot.
Nice piece of history. I worked in West Germany when I was 19. Before I came home I went to East Germany. I will never forget going passed the wall and seeing guard towers in the streets and little if any commercial signs. I couldn’t even tell where I could get lunch.
