This pier is a little bit more than a mile up the beach from where we are living. The following history of it comes from the local newspaper, the Sun-Sentinal, in an article published last year:
The venerable pier in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea was built by a man whose name was well suited to his love of fishing: Anglin.
Melvin Anglin, founder and first mayor of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, arrived in the area in 1918. For 10 years he pounded wood piles into the shoreline, constructed railings and nailed down planks.
In 1941 he opened the 876-foot-long fishing pier at the eastern end of Commercial Boulevard that bears his name: Anglin's Pier. A scant six years later, it was blown down in a hurricane. Anglin rebuilt it.
After he died in 1949, his sons, Bill and Thomas, took over. In 1960, the pier fell victim to Hurricane Donna and was rebuilt again, this time with reinforced concrete and pressure-treated wood. Dedicated in 1963, it has become a second home for anglers, pelicans and all the bluefish, snook and grouper a dedicates fisherman can snag from below.
Now there is also an organic cafe on the land-end of the pier. Great for early morning coffee.
Cool pier - so sorry I have been neglecting my commenting the last week but have had company steady. I thought it would be rude to neglect my guests to be on the computer!
(But I did miss my time with 365!)
