A very special crossing. I have to admit I'm feeing a little bit pleased with myself over this one; I don't mean the photos, which are average, but the idea, which came to me this morning as I was walking the dogs in a village nearby called Comberton. I was searching for inspiration for an X photo, thinking vaguely about finding a pedestrian crossing, when I remembered that the Greenwich Meridian runs just outside the village. There is a small marker by the roadside, where children from the local school also planted a tree in 1968. Dodging the traffic I took a photo of myself crossing from East to West. The limestone sculpture is in another part of the same village. It sits rather incongruously on a grass verge at a small junction. I'd always assumed that the line down the middle of the face was there to represent the meridian, but I'm not sure - there is no mention of it now I come to look it up. It is called Tranquility and the plaque says; the strength of this village lies in its people. Nothing to do with St Patrick's Day, sadly, but note, I am walking due West and if I keep going I'll hit Ireland somewhere near Wexford!
What a very special and interesting crossing you have nearby! Thank you for sharing the information about it. Also, I love the image & the photo you took of Tranquility.
Great idea for a pic - like the big head! The meridian passes near me also in East London also. There's a nice spot on a hill in Epping Forest in fact.
Well thought out and well executed, you should be pleased. I love the face sculpture and i'd like to think that the line in the face is the meridian line.
And I love all of the subject matter in this photo!
