I spent another afternoon at the workshop for my PhD supervisor. Last night there was a lovely meal in his honour at a nearby restaurant. Here he is giving a speech of thanks to his guests. In the foreground is Zhou Xioalin, now a very eminent professor of psychology at Beijing University. We shared a tiny office as graduate students in 1988. It was so great to see him again, and all the other old friends who had gathered to celebrate our supervisor - we owe him a great deal.
You might be wondering about the title. One dull day in our office, Joe (my Chinese friend's 'English' name) entertained the entire lab by translating our names into Chinese, by looking up the most unlikely interpretation of each syllable - there are many possible meanings for each syllable, and you can either pick the nice sensible ones, or you can pick the silly ones. Picking the silliest ones possible, this was the translation of Helen.
