Here We Go Again!

267 - Towards the end of June I included a shot of the riverside pub, the Kings Arms, during a period of flooding ( http://365project.org/if1/365/2012-06-24). Well, here we go again - the River Ouse has risen, the riverside walk has disappeared and a few properties close to the river are again affected by flood water.

This view is from the east end of Ouse Bridge, looking south past the Kings Arms. Most of the area in the centre of this shot, to the left of the boats and the boarding ramp behind, is normally dry, with tables and chairs from the neighbouring bars and restaurants providing a pleasant outdoor experience - but not today.

The river was about 4.4 metres above normal level when this shot was taken, and is forecast to rise to a peak of about 4.8 metres overnight. Fortunately the flood defences that protect most of the vulnerable areas in the city are designed to cope with flood heights of 5.5 metres.
Dreadful sight - I feel sorry for all those affected. Nevertheless it's a good photo.

agh, this breaks my heart to see. I agree, a good photo..but sad to see.
November 27th, 2012
Amazing pov and shot, hope the flooding subsides soon.
November 27th, 2012
Nice photo of a dreadful situation! It's amazing how much damage water does.
November 27th, 2012
Sad , but it`s great to have pic to show how sad. We, the people of Holland , are well know what water can do. We say: we have fight the water from tree directions , from the see , from heaven and from our back ( rivers )

I've been thinking of you since the heavy rainfall started up again. Such a dramatic picture this.
November 27th, 2012
Tragic event expertly captured. Floods are rated by their loss of life but often the emotional consequences take an even greater toll. Another extreme weather event, there are an increasing number of them.
November 27th, 2012
wow - goodness me. I used to work for the Environment Agency and am keeping them and all of you affected in my prayers. Keep safe!
November 27th, 2012
Boy two floods so close to each other...got to be expensive to repair.
November 27th, 2012
So sad to see the flooding - there must have been so much damage. Cool shot though - almost looks like a canal in Venice.
November 27th, 2012
Wow, impressive !

Bob
Flooding seems to be happening all over these times. Nice shot and commentary showing the flood.
November 27th, 2012
wow so much water, hopefully the damage and cleanup isn't too big
November 28th, 2012
Wow that is quite the scene. So sorry for more flooding
November 28th, 2012
Such a sad sight Ian. I'm glad that you live further away from all this.
November 28th, 2012
Oh my! That's a flood alright. You captured it very well. I'm sad for the businesses - I hope that clean-up isn't too bad.
November 28th, 2012
A very sad sight. I feel very for those people affected by this flood. It is such a shame.
November 28th, 2012
I do hope no one has been to seriously affected by all this rain!!!
(Lovely capture by the way!)

@glenmoor

Thank you Julian - fortunately there are good flood defences, so few properties are affected now compared with the situation when I first moved to York. The floods do give good photo opportunities though.
November 28th, 2012
@kdimagery

Thank you Kd - most vulnerable areas have flood defences, but a few unprotected areas do give photo opportunities like this one.
November 28th, 2012
@paintdipper

Thank you Junan - the floods have already begun to recede, which is good news.
November 28th, 2012
@gnilrets

Thank you Sterling. Fortunately most vulnerable property in York has flood defences, although there are areas like this which are still affected.
November 28th, 2012
@pyrrhula

Thank you Pyrrhula - I do like your saying! We mainly need to fight the river in York, and most vulnerable areas now have flood defences to protect them.
November 28th, 2012
@doodlerdeb

Thank you Debra - fortunately most vulnerable areas here have flood defences built, so the water is much less of a problem that it once was.
November 28th, 2012
@tonydebont

Thank you Tony - York's flood defences worked well so only a few properties were affected - terrible for those affected, but much better than the situation when I first moved to York
November 28th, 2012
@heathermaystanley

Thank you Heather - the flood defences worked well, with only a few properties in York itself affected. so that's quite a success story, but still sad for the unfortunate few.
November 28th, 2012
@brianl

Thank you Brian - fortunately most property in vulnerable areas has flood defences, so not as bad as it used to be before the defences were built.
November 28th, 2012
@ladyjane

Thank you Ladyjane - Fortunately most vulnerable property in York has flood defences, although there are areas like this which are still affected.
November 28th, 2012
@cocobella

Thank you Corinne - the bridge that I took this shot from was quite a photographers grandstand while I was there!
November 28th, 2012
@bobhuegel

Thank you Bob - this is the third flood this year - good job that we have flood defences around most of the vulnerable areas!
November 28th, 2012
@bobbyj

Thank you Bob - fortunately not too much property is affected due to good flood defences around most vulnerable areas.
November 28th, 2012
@bkbinthecity

Thank you Brian - the flood defences protected most vulnerable areas, but this part of the waterfront is still affected.
November 28th, 2012
@marieooi

Thank you Marie - not too much property affected, but it does look spectacular from the bridge I'm stood on here.
November 28th, 2012
@tara11

Thank you Tara - not too many properties affected. The pub here is so well organised to deal with this that earlier in the year it was back in use before the river was fully back within its normal course!
November 28th, 2012
@netkonnexion

Thank you Netkonnexion - fortunately there are good flood defences, so few properties are affected now compared with the situation when I first moved to York. The floods do give good photo opportunities though, especially from the bridge where I was stood here.
November 28th, 2012
@monkeykid

Thank you Therese - the main effect has been on a small number of properties not protected by flood defences. I'm not aware of anyone in York being injured as a result of this, although many have been inconvenienced.
November 28th, 2012
@if1 Wow - that's amazing that they can get back on their feet so quickly. But that's great all the same!
November 29th, 2012
Really great capture - a really pretty, but very sad scene!
November 29th, 2012
Wow more floods... Not good... Great shot though
November 29th, 2012
Great shot. Fav
November 29th, 2012
@kph129

Thank you Kristin - not as bad as last time, but this viewpoint makes it look quite dramatic.
November 29th, 2012
@roslynjoy

Thank you Roslyn, less severe this time, but not good for the properties affected.
November 29th, 2012
@collin

Thank you, glad you like it. This was a few hours before the peak, but it wasn't too much higher than this at the peak.
November 29th, 2012
Nice composition. It must be very frustrating living here under the constant threat of floods.
December 2nd, 2012
@busylady

Thank you Judith - fortunately many places are now protected by flood defences, so for most the floods are an inconvenience, but it must be worrying for those still affected. I think the pub here has been flooded 3 times this year, but the interior is designed to cope (stone floors, bare walls, drink stored upstairs rather than the cellars etc).
December 2nd, 2012
Oh my, this is dreadful! Great capture though,
December 3rd, 2012
@rhos

Thank you Ann - the pub on the left regularly features on local tv news when the river is up - they may loose a few days business, but later many visitors come to see it and sample it's wares!
