339 - After lunch I set off to walk into town, and passing the grounds of Bootham Park Hospital, I was surprised to see a military helicopter approaching the hospital grounds. So, a detour into the hospital grounds to catch this shot of the helicopter as it lifted off again.
I presume this was a practice mission rather than a real emergency, since nobody left the helicopter, and nothing was unloaded from it. After lifting off, it made two circuits around the area before departing, but unfortunately these circuits were too high to get any more shots.
For those interested in the technical information, this helicopter is a military Westland WG-13 Lynx AH7, registration ZD280.
Neat capture! This reminds me of the "Great Adventure" the boys had when they were small. We were up in the Snowdonia mountains when a helicopter landed quite close to us, quickly followed by another one. One of the passengers alighted from the first helicopter and got into the second before they both took off again. It couldn't have been any more exciting even if James Bond had appeared on the scene! (I think the boys were quite excited by it too)!!
Thank you all for your very generous comments. I was very fortunate to be there at the right time, and purely by change. My previous rather dramatic helicopter shot over the Minster definitely was a practice, because it was mentioned on local TV before the event ( http://365project.org/if1/365/2012-08-14). But I still haven't found confirmation why this landing took place.
@gamelee - either that or dropping off the empties!
@will_wooderson - no, just an interested bystander. My son in law is in the RAF, and lived for a while on a helicopter base. I discovered then what great photo subjects they could be!
What`s ever he was doing you have a great shot

Thank you Bob - it is certainly an excellent reason for always carrying the camera!
