Who knows what this ladybird was up to, maybe it suffers from insomnia, but really it should be tucked up somewhere safe for the winter by now.
It really should be robin shots I am posting at this time of year, and I am working on that. There is a robin hopping around me every day when I go up to feed the pigs at the moment and I am hoping to get him a bit tamer so I can get a nice close up at some point. We'll see......
I would like to think that it is the same one that I photographed last year, but given that the average lifespan of a robin is about 13 months I realise that that is quite unlikely.
Same here, out to buy more meal worms today, well that and the Christmas cake! Love this little insomniac. Interestingly for more than a decade, a zoologist at Cambridge University named Michael Majerus studied the ability of the orange ladybird to predict the weather of the oncoming winter by the way in which it hibernates. if the ladybird spends its wing above ground, nestling in a small crevice such as the branch of a smooth surfaced tree like the sycamore at least 3 ft from the ground - then the winter will be mild. But if it hibernates on the ground among dead, dry leaves then expect a harsh winter. To date this has proved a totally
accurate forecast. So watch you little friend and see where he heads!
Lovely tones in this shot but I sure hope he gets to his hibernation place in time. I always fed the ladybugs at our university some water when they interrupted their hibernation because it was too warm inside the building...
Nooooo... I have been searching high and low for insects and have finally given up, and now you produce one from your own private collection! Lovely shot.
So great to see! I have seen a few bees emerging from leaves on the ground this week and flying about! Wonderful shot - the light is fab! @lucypics Love that you can tell the weather using ladybirds!!!
Lovely shot...all our ladybugs headed for ground and piles of leaves at the end of October!! Can't blame them...we have had a nasty storm here, so glad I wasn't working yesterday, stayed home and did some housework instead!! I'd love to get out today...should be some lovely photos around, but it's -16C and still snowy and blowy!
accurate forecast. So watch you little friend and see where he heads!
