Insect case

Not sure of the terminology, but when I was a kid we called them insect cases. Despite a degree in applied science I still have no idea what happens to the insect that used to be in the 'case'.
It is a cicada shell and here is the process of the cicada shedding its shell.

We often see kids in the bushland near us collecting shells in sand buckets.

@onewing Thanks Babs - totally amazing isn't it. I could hear the cicadas in the tree but couldn't see any - only the shell.

Lovely detail...looks like it's creeping...I love cicadas and would love finding one still inside and watch and wait for it to emerge

@jeneurell my would love finding meant I did love finding them still inside - I have watched quite a few cicadas emerge over the years - it is quite a slow process :)
