Learning

A old photo of me and my Dad from whom I gained my love of photography. We didn't have much common ground but we had photography. Going through his gear recently I found a information card from the Graflex company about Depth of Field. I now have this in my own gear bag, which includes the much cherished Rolliflex. I've used this a few times but not enough!

Times have moved on in photography. My first digital camera 15 years ago was a Fuji finepix 1300 with a 1.3 megapixel sensor. Did you get a photo of the person taking this photo?

@gamelee It was my sister with my camera. I hadn't yet received the Rollie. Film is still around and there are several here on 365 who do primarily film work. I am challenged for darkroom space at present but with a scanner and a small bathroom I can make do.

I have my mum's Rolleiflex upstairs. It took great big square negatives and very clear photos.

@30pics4jackiesdiamond I haven't tried color film in my yet but now that I've found courage to try processing color film at home and then use a scanner, I don't have to bother with an enlarger and all those trays. I like the lens even it is is 70+ years old.

I just brought my father's 1956 Rollieflex in for conditioning this past week! It's expected to take 4.5 months to complete the rehab, but I can't wait to try it. Do you have any resources you could recommend for learning how to use it?

@cjoye How much fun you will have. I purchased a manual on line ( http://www.butkus.org/chinon/rollei/rolleiflex_28_e/rolleiflex_28e.htm) and maybe try youtube. I need to have mine conditioning/cleaning but I hesitate as to where. I am not sure if this will help but, I also do some large format work and deal a great deal with ( https://www.bostick-sullivan.com/cart/contact_us/) - they mostly work with the chemicals and paper but they may have some information or names for instructors in the San Diego Area. Might be worth a try.

He looks so invested in showing you how the camera works. Wonderful family photo of you two.

Love the nostalgic feel here. How wonderful that you still have his gear

@kali66 Thank you, He is gone now but I still do cherish the times we could talk about photography. He was a photographer with the Army during WWII.

@cjphoto This was at my college graduation and I felt honored he let me use the camera. I always wonder what he would think about digital. He was around long enough for computers but always typed his letters on his trusty Remington typewriter (manual of course).

@susale I have also found some old un-used 35mm film. It is about 55 years old - so maybe? The camera was and is still a lovely piece of equipment.

@yrhenwr I am so grateful that I have it now. I am waiting for the weekend to load the roll and go out. It rained all day and I didn't want to chance getting it wet.

I love this for the story behind it! I lost my father in my teen years (a long time ago) you are so lucky to have this capture of you together sharing something you both love!

@ukandie1 Thank you so much, I have this image on my quote wall in my office. I think that his actions just speak volumes. Time tends to soften the rough spots.
