Up above Amalfi is the elegant little town of Ravello. Still very popular with the rich and famous it was a favourite of Greta Garbo, Jacqueline Kennedy, Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall and other proper stars - none of your Kardashian nonsense! It was the perfect quiet place to spend our last day while waiting for a late flight home. A calm, smooth taxi driver took us up the hairpins, looked after our bags while we explored and picked us up again a few hours later to take us over the mountains of the national park back to Naples -a major relief after the horrific drive when we arrived! It's officially 360m above sea level but the bottom to the top of its boundaries must be about 200m - there is a lot of climbing required to get up to the spectacular gardens of Villa Cimbrone - we just missed Paloma Faith who was there the day after...
Wonderful selection of photos to show this enchanting place! A lot of small towns seem to be perched so high up on mountains so good to be able to drive up so far! We went up to several like this in both near Nice and also on the western coast of Italy. Brings back memories of hot sun, sharp shadows and narrow streets!
You are just around the corner from me! Lovely collage. Really nicely put together. Did you get the storm last night? Are you heading into Naples??? Don't be afraid to do so ... it's fascinating!
@helly31 I am in awe of you driving any where near Naples but very envious of you being in the area. Beautiful - we didn't go into Naples because we didn't have a huge amount of time and it was so hot. I'd like to do another trip sometime when it's cooler/quieter and do the Naples area - I've just started the first of Elena Ferrante's books set in Naples.
What a fabulous collage of your break...as @phil_howcroft says...had to get some kind of 'bike' in there! We dream of some warmth and then we get there it is too b** hot to do anything!! Us brits eh? Looking forward to a break in Portugal beginning of September.
I love ALL of your Italy images! You've captured everything so beautifully. I'll be going to Tuscany in a few weeks with my daughter - I can't wait. She'll be spending a week on the Amalfi coast before I meet her in Rome so I've shared these links with her.
@yellowdog Thank you - it's beautiful! Just make sure if your daughter wants a taxi to get one to come from the coast to Naples rather than hiring a driver at the airport - a very big different in sanity levels!! Tuscany will be amazing as well.
