The strong low sunlight this morning meant that I couldn't really see what I was doing with my DSLR and the photos were disappointing when I got home - hence this is iPhone. I spoke too soon when I said there hadn't been much damage. This is the remains of one of the iconic willow trees on the river bank at Trinity. Apparently the main trunk of the tree that hit the water (must have been something to see and hear) was absolutely massive. They must have cut it up in the water some how because they had just winched a slice of it with some difficulty out of the water and another punt was downstream rounding up a chunk that had floated off. Since tree surgeons in my experience tend to be tree lovers they must have been a bit sad. On a happier note the college replaced the truly stunning willows on the other side of the river a few years ago because the river bank was collapsing and the replacement trees are starting to make an impact - I decided that if I live an average lifespan they will be back to being impressive!!
That is sad to read Judith. THe willows along the embankment in Bedford seem to have survived, although one of them had a similar fate to yours just a few months ago. Sorry you had disappointment with your main camera - it was indeed very bright this morning.
Oh no, totally gutted! That was one of our favourite trees along the bank there. It must have been a bit poorly to have succumbed to the storm. At least there are all those beautiful willows on the other bank, but oh how sad.
@maggiemae the detector on the top of the computer labs recorded gusts in excess of 58 miles/hour (went off scale) which is very high for this far in land.
Oh dear that is a sad sight Judith. I can see the willow tree would have been so graceful dipping its branches down into the water. Makes an interesting sight to see the men clearing up the damage. The punt looks very smart with the checked rugs.
It was quite a storm...! Hope it starts to recover - those are pollarded sometimes (I think) and it takes a lot to kill them. I managed, by the way, to kill both willow sticks (planted for a playhouse) and a willow tree (though I suspect next-door's weedkiller) so I'm no expert on this! Love the colour in the shot, too
