As you can see, this old barn in the middle of the woods is being reclaimed by nature. Because North Manitou Island is a National Wilderness area, the land is slowly reverting back to its original state. Sad to see such a regal building crumble into dust!
How did this all happen? Were people asked to leave? Interesting dilemma.

@vstap I guess eventually the pine trees were all cut down and people could no longer make a living on the island, so they moved. After some years, the feds took over and made it part of the Sleeping Dunes National Lakeshore. It would be interesting to read the history of the island. I really don't know all the details. :)
