Pohutukawa is commonly known as the New Zealand Cristmas tree.. or Metrosideros excelsa.. It lines the North Island coastal beaches and bursts into flower in December.. Went on a bit of a road trip today with Dianne @dide to the township of Thames and the Pohutukawa's are just starting to show some colour.. this was a very good speciman.. the bee's love the flowers and Pohutukawa honey is very tasty...
There are some whoppers in Thames....we're lucky enough to have one in our garden, right outside the bedroom, which is perfect for sitting under on a hot summers day with a glass of wine
@graemestevens What better way to celebrate our beautiful native tree... we also have one in our garden.. we planted it when we got engaged 40 years ago....
@shesnapped Thanks for you comment .. check out @dide she has put up a collage of the flowers and buds.. but I will be doing more Pohutukawa trees as they come into flower around here over the next few weeks.... you could get sick of them... it is fair to say it is my favourite tree...
@terryliv It is a big tree but I have seen bigger.. but I remember seeing them in Brisbane and they were just planted as street trees... they will get bigger...thanks for the fav
@beryl Thanks Beryl it was/is a stunning tree.. you may be able to see under the tree is a seat .. but the bee's were very busy so I don't think I would like to linger under there...
