New Zealand Christmas tree.. by julzmaioro

New Zealand Christmas tree..

Yesterday while travelling up to Matarangi via the Coramandel Coast we were hoping to see lots of the Native Tree Pohutukawa in full flower.. These tree's line both sides of the Coast road and some of them cling on to the smallest of rocks.. The majority of them are about a week off being in full flower but @dide and I got quite excited when we saw this beauty in full flower and a spot to be able to park.. The flowers attract both bee's and Tui's ( nectar feeding native bird)
Wow!Amazing !I've never seen such a beautiful tree!Love how you composed and photographed this!Fav!

Great shot, we have one of these monsters in our back garden and I have been known to sit under on a summers evening with a wine in hand.

@graemestevens That sounds like a wonderful thing to do.. we have several on the farm so you have given me an idea.. are they showing any colour down there yet Graeme..

@julzmaioro Not yet but it can't be far away, I'm more concerned with the Tui nest in one of the other trees at the moment. I'm spending a lot of time guarding it from the local cats.

I love it!! We set off at 7 and drove via Coromandel but had to turn back due to a car accident near Boundary Creek :( Spent an hour taking a very long way around via Coroglen and arrived back in Wellington just before 8!

@kiwichick Oh poor you, thinking about you this morning when I heard about the accident, so pleased you arrived back safely, So you missed out on your brekky.. This tree was just before Thornton Bay I think..

Magnificent! Our neighbours' pohutukawa trees are still just budding, but they never have a show as good as the one in your shot.
December 10th, 2015
We had a late brekky! Someone stopped us a few kms before we got to the accident so we didn't see it. We'd just got onto the stretch with the Pohutukawas. The road was closed all morning though. We had to take the narrow dirt 309 across the hills, which was busy as it was the quickest detour. So sad about the accident :(

This looks magnificent! We'll have to have some tiki tours in another week or so. Fav

@happypat Bit hard to put in the lounge with the press's under it though Pat.. they are certainly a sight to behold when in full flower like this one.. and a bonus a good location..
December 10th, 2015
This is a wonderful tree, it looks a bit like the flame trees of Africa. How clever of it to flower in time for Christmas,!!!!
December 10th, 2015
@kelly2 We have flame tree's as well, an very different I will get a close up shot when our tree is flowering so that you can see the tree detail.. We are lucky to have them right on Christmas

Is this an unusually large one Julia. The ones I have seen are large shrubs/small trees. Great shot BTW
December 12th, 2015
@terryliv This is the way they grow here Terry.. and even bigger.. there is a smaller shrub variety.. this is the true native one.
