Just back from 3 day's at the fantastic Island Reserve of Tiri Tiri Matangi which is a 220 Hectare Island just off the coast of Auckland NZ. It is run by DOC ( Department of Conservation) with the help from Volunteers .. It was farmland back in 1984 when replanting of the 250,000 - 300,000 Native tree's which are now covering 60% of the Island.
All predators have been eradicated and a number of threatened and endangered birds and reptiles have been successfully introduced.. The flightless Takahe ( centre top) is one of the success stories .. and the little North Island Robin (centre bottom) also very rare on the mainland .. The Tui on the right is quite common but great to see in big numbers and are a lot easier to photograph in their happy playground here..
The lighthouse is now automated and was built in England in 1884..
@happypat We were up before the birdsong every day .. to go down into the bush and just sit and listen ... amazing... the hedge sparrows and magpies just do not sound the same..
@julzmaioro Blimey Julz I can't even spell un afraid properly, I had a devil of a job trying to type it as predictive stuff wouldn't let me write it. Thought I had spelt it wrong but I find it looks terrible sitting there! Funny when you are typing with one finger & not looking at what you're writing how often the words come out spelt completely wrong!
