The main home of the Staatsbibliothek is going to reopen on Thursday this week, and the three of us who are fellowship recipients were invited on a private tour. It was a rare opportunity to photograph a place with no people in it so I brought my wide angle and tried not to hold up the tour while quickly snapping a few shots.
The giant art piece in the middle was created from images taken from the library's holdings, blown up large in aluminum, and presented as if "trash" as a play on the idea of the wealth of resources here.
The screens let in light but keep the book-damaging UV rays out, as do the interestingly warped glass on the windows (more visible on the upper level when viewed in large).
This one is SOOC. Today is a day I wish I could post ten photos!
Fabulous, and congratulations on being a fellowship recipient! I love these types of spaces, and I'm particularly interested in the ways libraries are emerging in renewed spaces given our advances in technology. I work for a small college in Nebraska online, and currently, the library specialists are seeking new ways to even "exist." Such a difficult time, but I see, hopefully, new advances without losing the "building."
What a gigantic space, and without any support pillars. So nice that it was designed to allow natural light without harming the books.
