Day 5 in Poland: Today, I went to the university to meet with my department head. He took me for a walk to show me the Farmer's Market, and we passed a shop with piles of doughnuts in the front window. He told me that in Poland, today is "Doughnut Thursday" and that everyone eats these special donuts filled with plum or rose jam. And since I live in Poland now, I did, too.
@taffy -- so MUCH has happened, and I will catch up posting some day, but I just wanted to get this one up today. I've been scouting out places for you, and Bill and I even tried the hot chocolate at this special shop today to make sure you'd like it. And we're sure you will. There's an entirely chocolate only menu at a shop a few steps from my apartment!
Lovely! Are you living in Poland Junko? I didn't realise you were moving from Chicago. You always seem to be in a different place all round the world. Have you finished the judging yet?
@hippiechick13 -- are you Polish? I'd never even heard of this concept before. @amandal@karlow75@agedrunner@dmcoile@cocobella -- thank you! It turned out to be quite realistic in the photograph so I wanted to reach in and have one out of my computer, too. As @hippiechick13 indicates, it's an annual holiday and not every Thursday (or I'd weigh a ton.)
@pamknowler -- I'm only living here for half a year on a Fulbright Fellowship program, teaching at Wrocław University. I do research/speak/consult and travel to about 14 countries a year these last few years, and some more than once in a year! As to whether I'm finished judging, the Nami Concours from January (the lantern series you just commented on) is finished and announced but not awarded until May. The Caldecott was finished the beginning of February and announced as well.
How exciting to experience a different county not just as a tourist but to live there and find out all the little lovely local traditions. So Doughnut Thursday is like Spaghetti Wednesday in Boston.
