Kohlrabi by jyokota

Kohlrabi

I bought it the first day I arrived in Munich. The color appealed to me. Nearly two weeks later, the leaves are growing so nicely I may just have to keep this as decoration for my quite empty temporary flat rather than eating it.

Well i've never heard of these, I like the colour and your shot.

The colour is striking

Wow, this is the most attractive vegetable I've seen in a lomg time!

@vera365 -- from the bio market, Basic. My favorite shop other than Vikualienmarkt. @gamelee - This vegetable always reminds me of Germany because I don't eat it anywhere else. I suppose I should eat it -- after all, it's a vegetable, but I've grown accustomed to seeing it sitting on my window sill.

Love kohlrabi!

growing nicely on the window sill... nice light through the leaves..
August 11th, 2017
@laurieewilson -- I only know to slice it up and put it in a salad. Do you cook yours?
August 11th, 2017
We love kohlrabi (raw), but I agree that this makes a lovely plant.

That looks fabulous. I like the way only the leaves are in focus and they have such wonderful backlighting.

Haha - too pretty to eat I think! Also never heard of them but enjoy, one day!

Lovely image! Of this unusual vegetable. Are you living in Germany now?
August 11th, 2017
Never heard of this vegetable Junko but it makes such an attractive display maybe leave it and see if it changes. Could be another photo opportunity! Love the light through the leaves and the very pretty bokeh! Fav!

Great still life

@jamibann -- yes, in Munich for nearly two months. But I'm still playing catchup with Australia. I had an accident in Buenos Aires and was off of 365 for a few weeks . . . and also ended up with ZERO photos of Argentina (except in the emergency room!).

@pamknowler -- Ever the photographer thinking ahead -- could be a good photo op! You are the most supportive commenter -- thanks!

@julzmaioro @houser934 @dkbarnett @lyndamcg @777margo - thanks for your comments! Funny how a vegetable can intrigue the eye to the point of not being eaten in weeks!
August 11th, 2017
Love the taste of that but I have to say the photographic potential was worth the edible sacrifice!
Sounds like you had a few adventures........emergency room doesn't sound good!! Hope you are okay.

@casablanca -- thanks for your comment and your concern! I ended up wearing a "boot" for awhile, and clomping around. And frankly, it was is supportive that I didn't feel nearly as much pain as I do now. But my ankle was getting stiff and my back was feeling the variation in height of my two legs so I'm doing my best now with hiking boots. I wonder if I should go to a doctor here in Germany?

I had one of those for a while after I broke my ankle. I went to see a Physiotherapist and asked them for stretches and exercises to ease my stiff ankle and my lower back. I found that really helpful. Maybe you could check out if there is a useful Physiotherapist near you in Munich? Smiled when I saw you were there - I know it well and my cousin lives and works there! I do heartily wish you well.

Superb composition!! Nice to see you posting!
August 11th, 2017
@jyokota I actually grew up just eating them raw. Kind of like a raw potato, more of a taste between a turnip and cabbage. My dad used to cut them up and we would eat them, that and also raw potatoes and cabbage. Different right?
August 11th, 2017
@jyokota oh dear, very sorry to hear about your Argentine experience! Look after yourself and enjoy Munich!
August 12th, 2017
@casablanca -- I have been coming to Munich every year for ten years -- anywhere from 2 weeks to 5 months at a time! Perhaps we can photowalk in Munich together some day! Tonight, I am going to a photo meet-up with the local photo group here. We are going to Kochelsee to photograph the meteor shower!
August 12th, 2017
@taffy - trying to post the occasional current photo that's not too confusing as a location while finishing Australia in July. Still limping around Munich without my camera. Ankle is super slow to heal.
August 12th, 2017
@laurieewilson -- do you think that the longer I leave it (and the leaves grow increasingly interestingly) the less water the vegetable portion holds? It's starting to look different in shape and I wonder if the leaves suck out the water?
August 12th, 2017
@jamibann -- thanks for the sympathy. I was super sad about Argentina because I had booked a photo guide as well as a walk with a photo book illustrator, and I had carried my arsenal of lenses and even my heavy tripod - and ended up with ZERO photos. Oh, well. I did my work well so have already been told I will be invited back next year.
August 12th, 2017
Sounds brilliant! I will shout next time I am headed that way. Hope you had a fun time with the meteors!
August 12th, 2017
This is so interesting. Great shot.

Pleasing composition.

Lovely
August 14th, 2017
Every Kohlrabi I have bought here has been green, I wonder if there is any difference in the taste! Super capture!
August 15th, 2017
Such lovely light, focus and dof! fav
August 15th, 2017
Nice...I love the bokeh background as well as the Kohlrabi, which I have never heard of before. I haven't been to Germany since 1976...too long!
August 15th, 2017
love the colour contrast
August 16th, 2017
I'm really stunned not only by the picture but by how many people don't know Kohlrabi. I also just now learned that it's also kohlrabi in English, very funny. When I was a child, my parents and grandparents cooked them regularly as a side dish and I didn't like them very much (I like them raw). But I loved the cooked leaves! They are really delicious, you shoud try them!
August 17th, 2017
Amazing how they still grow after they are picked .
August 17th, 2017
Really like how you composed this, with the focus on the green leaves. I've never heard of veggie, I'd love to try it!
August 24th, 2017
It's growing!!!!
August 25th, 2017
This is great. Actually I think they are prettier than they are tasty.
August 25th, 2017
Really like the contrast of a natural thing surrounded by man made. Fav!
