Falling Waters

I returned to Capron Road hoping to get a photo of this waterfall. That proved to be a bigger challenge than you might thing, because one side is private property and the other side is on a ledge above the falls and is covered with briars. No matter where I took the shot, there were annoying branches in the foreground. I do want to return to that spot over time because the background will be very nice certain times of the year, but at the same time, I don't look forward to dealing with the briars when they're in full growth. The falls are part of the Woonasquatucket River and ultimately feed into Georgiaville Pond before heading past all of the mills in Smithfield, North Providence, and Providence. Like most of the waterfalls in the area, they're man-made.

I decided to go with a black and white today, simply because of the challenge of producing a decent black and white out of a scene we normally think of in color. I used a soft focus layer to tone down the sharpness of the falls, but - by combining that with a layer mask - I kept the sharp image of the rest of the landscape. The conversion to black and white was done with a gradient map, but I added a couple of additional stops in the map to provide a bit more tonal depth. Levels adjustments improved the contrast, and I added a blue photo filter to add a bit of a dusk feel to the image.
