The City By the Sea

I went on a Save the Bay Seal Cruise out of Newport, RI this morning. While there are many nice shots of Harbor Seals hauled out on the rocks, I really liked this shot of Historic Newport as we sailed back into port. The large white church is the historic Trinity Episcopal Church, which dates back to the colonial era. George Washington attended at least one service there. The dock area was built up considerably over the years, but the buildings behind the docks along historic Thames Street and beyond date back to the 18th century. Newport was spared destruction both in the American Revolution and in the War of 1812, so it remains a very rare example of a colonial city that has been in constant use since the mid-1600s.

I kept the post processing relatively simple. A "simple pop" filter in Topaz Adjust was used to bring out the color. I used a high pass filter with a soft light blend mode to sharpen the image just a tad. A couple of hue and levels adjustments were added to correct the white balance just a bit. I resisted the urge to turn this into a painting or other "artsy" type image, though. No background texture was added, either.
