Evans School House by kannafoot

Evans School House

Here’s another of Rhode Island’s surviving one-room schoolhouses. This one’s the Evans School House in historic Chepachet. Built circa 1867, the building and land was donated by Glocester resident Daniel Evans. (Chepachet is a village in Glocester, RI.) Most of the one-room school houses in the area were donated by prominent residents, although typically the land donated for this purpose was not suitable for farming. The Evans School serviced the students of Chepachet will into the 1930s but, like most others in that time period, the school was ultimately closed. It fell into a very sad state of disrepair and was moved to property behind the Town Hall. A restoration project was initiated by the Glocester Heritage Society, and on June 15, 2003, the building was rededicated.

I ran this through a brilliant cool filter in Topaz Adjust. Then, just beneath that layer, I added a blank cream-colored layer to serve as the border after the next step was done. Using the cookie cutter tool, I cut a jagged border out of the photo, leaving the cream layer below exposed on the edges. From there I applied a b&w gradient map in color blend mode and added a sepia filter. I adjusted the levels a bit, followed by the contrast. I finally applied a second sepia filter just to the border to darken the faded look just a hair.
Awesome shot Ron - I loved the history behind it too.

Love the simplicity of the structure. Glad the people of the area chose to restore it. Nicely processed shot!
