Historic Setting

One popular method of engaging in street photography is to find an interesting background and just wait for a subject to pass in front that adds to the story being told. I don't use that technique often enough, but my fascination with these 18th Century buildings in Providence compelled me to use it today. The three buildings in the background belong to the Providence Art Club. The Club dates to 1880 and is the second oldest art club in the nation. The buildings are a century older. From left to right, they are the Deacon Edward Taylor House (built in 1784,) the Seril Dodge House (1786,) and the Obadiah Brown Brick House (1790.) It took about 30 minutes of waiting patiently for just the right moment, but I was finally rewarded with this shot of a young college student flying down the steep hill on Thomas Street without any other modern traffic nearby to detract from the beauty of the background.

Post processing started with a brilliant cold filter in Topaz Adjust. I then adjusted adaptive exposure, contrast, and protect highlights. A levels adjustment was added in PSE.

Here's the high res version in Smugmug: http://kannafoot.smugmug.com/Photo-Challenges/PAD2013/i-SqPmcBg/0/XL/2013%2008%2023_0061%20copy-XL.jpg
Nice background indeed, and I like how the cyclist adds a modern counterpoint (and a motion sensation).
By the way, I really appreciate the time you take in explaining your "tricks" and giving your advice: thanks a lot
