Butterfly Pond

I've displayed Butterfly Pond several times over the past couple of years, although this is the first time I've composed the scene from this angle. When I set out for today's photo, my original plan was to photograph some of the 19th century mill housing in Lonsdale. Driving past this pond, though, I noticed the amount of water pouring over the dam in front of the frozen lake. With the shadows from the trees, I knew it would be an interesting black and white. Not wanting to miss the high water volume opportunity, I decided to save the mill housing for another day. This photo was taken from the bridge on Great Road looking down at the falls. It was a good vantage point from which to include the concrete blocks in front that date back to the 18th century.
Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders, contrast, adaptive exposure, regions, boost black, and protect highlights. A levels adjustment was added in PSE.
