Ice Fishing with Rod and Reel

Ice Fishing with Rod and Reel

Lincoln, Rhode Island

It was fairly mild, today, so I decided to swing by Lincoln Woods and see if there were any ice fishermen on Olney Pond. There were only a couple, but that's all I needed. While I was photographing this fisherman, the other gentleman walked out onto the pond with his dog. Where he stopped to talk to the fisherman (not knowing he'd walked into the scene I was shooting) was perfect for the photo. What I found interesting was the use of a rod and reel. He was using a standard lure but wasn't using a standard ice fishing rig. Whatever he did worked, since he did have a very nice brown trout in his tub.

Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders, adaptive exposure, regions, contrast, boost black, and boost white. A levels adjustment and a bit of a dodge and burn were added in PSE.

Here's the high res version in Smugmug: http://kannafoot.smugmug.com/Photo-Challenges/PAD2014/i-GQHnScH/0/XL/2014%2001%2031_0016%20copy-XL.jpg

All that snow looks so good in black and white. I've never seen ice fishing in person, so this is very interesting to me.
