Shattered

I see this neglected old store front every morning on my way to work. The building was built in the mid-19th century and has undergone some cosmetic changes over the years. As you can see, the original windows - typical of that time period - were large panes that encompassed almost the entire front of the building. As time passed and the area grew increasingly economically depressed, crime in the area increased proportionally, and the size of the windows shrank. At the height of the 1960s period of racial tensions, the windows were limited to the two small panes just in the front, and those had bars on them. When the area started to recover in the '80s, the windows witnessed a similar expansion. The bars were removed and the windows extended into the foyer. Like most small convenience stores, though, the rapid growth of the large supermarkets forced this one out of business, and the building lay empty for the better part of a decade. The smashed glass, the crumbling interior, and the boarded cellar windows are all testament to the state of decay the building has suffered.

Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders, adaptive exposure, regions, contrast, and boost black. A levels adjustment was added in PSE.

Here's the high res version in Smugmug: http://kannafoot.smugmug.com/Photo-Challenges/PAD2014/i-mQ6pkLT/0/XL/2014%2006%2004_0004%20copy-XL.jpg
I hope one day this will all be renovated, and the city will publish your photo here and no one will be able to believe how it used to be.
