Replicas of Columbus' two Caravels, The Niña and The Pinta, are in Bristol this weekend. Both Caravels were hand made using the materials, tools, and methods that were available in the late 15th century. They are considered the most authentic reproductions of Columbus' ships available today. The Santa Maria, the largest of his ships, has not been replicated in this fashion since its draft (14 feet) is too deep for most of the ports visited by these two.

Both ships are open to the public, and they attracted a bit of a crowd both on land and on the water. Here you see a couple of kayakers paddling up close to inspect the anachronistic visitors. I can just imagine the natives in the West Indies doing the same thing when Columbus first sailed up to their shores.

Post processing started with a neutral greyscale filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders, adaptive exposure, regions, contrast, brightness, boost black, and boost white. A levels adjustment was added in PSE.

Here's the high res version in Smugmug: http://kannafoot.smugmug.com/Photo-Challenges/PAD2014/i-6qSHJz5/0/XL/2014%2006%2008_0026%20copy-XL.jpg
