Abandoned Cart

I wonder if there have ever been any psychological studies intended to understand the mind of an artist. I have no idea why this lone shopping cart, carelessly left on an island between the parking lot and a main street, caught my attention, but it did. I never intended to photograph it, and I was at least a half-mile further down the road when I was compelled to turn around and see what I could make of it. I did get some odd looks from passing motorists as I circled the cart several times looking for the perfect spot from which to take the photo. The one thing I have learned over the past three years of this project, though, is not to ignore that compulsion when you're drawn to a particular scene. Looking at it now, with the deep contrast in the shadows, the chipped paint on the pole, and even the drooping power lines in the background, I'm glad I turned around.
Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders. adaptive exposure, regions, contrast, boost black, boost white, and protect highlights. A levels adjustment was added in PSE.
