A female coyote had a litter of pups at a popular photo area in the Grand Teton National Park. I think we were at the Mormon Row Barn area. This is one of the brave little pups who came out to check us out. There was a line of photographers with giant wildlife lenses trying to get a photo so it was a real treat when he ventured out.
This is really wonderful Kathy. Sounds like it was a great place to visit.
Re : peafowl ...I think you are going to really enjoy them...the first thing though it be aware that even as little chicks, they can fly pretty well and they can also squeeze through small openings. With my first chicks that were about two weeks old, I thought I would start them off in a medium sized dog crate. As soon as we put them in, one squeezed our and flew off and we never could catch it and it disappeared after a couple of days...so chicken wire whatever they are going in. I gave them some special pellets for initially then just chicken scratch. They really love meat..in the wild they might eat mice etc, and they love grapes, tomatoes berries etc... Mostly after 2 or 3 months I think I just let them roam with the chickens... When they get bigger, they do like roosting up high so we encouraged them to fly up to our balcony...that novelty wore off quickly after they destroyed all my flower box plants and made a lot of mess. I even found them in the house one time as I had left the door open.,π
They do like dark coloured cars and will sit and poop on them. We tolerate them sittin on the bed of our dark truck but the neighbours weren't too happy about them on their black mecerdes...oops !
When they get bigger they also do like to call to each other at nightwhen they roost...I love hearing them and it's not constant, just usually at dusk and dawn..again though, some of my neighbours don't like to hear them,
They may also wander when they get bigger if you free range them so I would keep giving them treats and they hopefully will always come back home. I really enjoy having then around and I am sure you will too. Good luck with them.π₯
Btw, hope that didn't sound too negative...the positives of having these beautiful birds around really out weighs the negatives. I feel so fortunate having them around....you will enjoy them too I'm sure.
@bristolrose Kathryn, Thank you so much! I found your advice really helpful. After they are old enough, I do plan on letting them free range. I will give a lot of treats so they will stay around. If they do start bothering a neighbor by roosting on their car is there a way to gently discourage them?
@kathyladley yes, I told my neighbours to spray them with water or even let their dogs chase them and it seems to have worked.,the peafowl fly so well they are not in danger of being caught by the dogs...and spraying them with water or chasing them away works well too..
