St Brigid's by leggzy

St Brigid's

I have been on a rather big adventure today, seeking out a heap of OLD churches that a work colleague told me about.

This one is St Brigid's Catholic church at a tiny place called Moorilda...basically in the middle of nowhere. It took some finding, let me tell you!

It is now privately owned, and is along a rather remote dirt road/driveway, and I was a bit worried about driving up to it to find that people might be living there & I've just driven up their driveway for a sticky beak!!....but I plucked up the courage & went for it - lol. It is all gated & locked up, and no-one appeared to be there....so I had to take my shots from outside the fence. As you can see, there's a sign saying to keep out - no problem, a couple of shots from outside the fence will do me fine, thank you very much :)

I can't find any information on when it was built etc - all I have found online is that it was a catholic church & I also found an old newspaper article about a wedding held there in Feb 1937, and that it was 33 years before that, that the last wedding was held there. It looks to be built of what we call blue stone, and I'm guessing that it was possibly built somewhere around 1860-1880.

Catholic Church - Moorilda
Beautiful building. Well done for being brave. I felt the same kinda worry about tresspassing when we visited the abandoned farm during half term. In the end I but the bullet and climbed the fence (there was no keep out sign though, at least not that were could see) Was you tempted? Think I would have been 😊

@paul10 No, as I'm not game enough to jump fences anymore, as I once did that only to have the owner come along & accuse me of being there to take photos of what he had, and that I was then going to come back (probably at night) to steal his stuff!! So nope, that incident really scared me off jumping fences.

The sign also said that it was under police surveillance - it probably wasn't, seeings it was in the middle of nowhere, but still, just another element to scare me off...lol

@leggzy. Oh no. Now that sounds like a bad experience. Think the police sign might have kept me out too. We once visited an abandoned church at night. Everything was fine until we triggered an alarm (which were didn't know was there) and this voice spoke warning us the police were on there way. We were that shook up hearing a voice booming through the night (the church is known as the demon cchurch and can be a horrible place to visit at times) we couldn't get the door opened. Never did find out how it got closed! We all denied shutting it. Anyway, we got out and legged it to our car. Was a while before we went back 😱😱

@paul10 oh my, what a freaky experience! I don't think I could have EVER gone back if that was me. A great story to tell round the camp fire though 😱

A lovely old church, a pity it's so unwelcoming.

Oh, this is lovely. The brickwork looks wonderful as does the detail above the arched windows.
