Formerly Known As

Most of the Lerwick lanes have a former name. Apparently the original name was  after the developer of the particular area but in 1845 the Police Commissioners decided to rename them with name from  Contemporary Political events / people (Pitt Lane for example) or from book characters. I do wonder if crooked lane was political or from a book?
