Mr Man, our Nuts'n'Bolts man was in a sombre mood. Yolanda had pointed out the earthquake damage to this beautiful church in Christchurch NZ.
This church suffered in the first earthquake and featured in the news a fair bit at the time. It’s crazy to think that all that appeared to be damaged then were some bricks that had fallen from near the roof. Now, Knox Church is all but a wooden frame holding up a roof.
It was eerie for our duo to drive past this large church and be able to look straight through it to trees on the other side.
Oh, I remember when I watched the news about this. So very sad. (This is a wonderful shot.) That Yolanda seems to be very tender ; ) I wonder where they are heading next!!!
Mr Man & Yolanda will be sad to see their country like this & I hope it doesn't put a damper on their travels.
Perhaps a stiff whiskey for Yolanda & a lime & lemon for Mr Man as he is driving!
My cousin lives in Christchurch. Of the day of the quake, she was on the other side of the city and had to make her way home through the debris. As soon as possible, she went to stay with her brother in Auckland. The devastation of the historic district was heart breaking. I like your photo, though!
@catwoman2 Thanks Mary! It was and still is a very difficult time! Where they are going to find the money to rebuild, heaven knows - now that might be appropriate in the churches cases!
The processing really adds to the mood of the shot. Am I understanding this correctly- that the bricks of the walls all tumbled in the quake along with those of the roof?
@olivetreeann "In the September earthquake, the New Zealand Historic Places Trust category 2 church suffered some brick loss and substantial cracking around the window frames.
In February, the brick walls collapsed to window height, limestone finials fell through the roof and windows - including a large stained glass one designed by stained glass conservator and artist Graham Stewart - shattered.
While the facade of the 1902 Gothic Revival church, once described as 'the prettiest in Christchurch', was in tatters, inside the dado panelling was still intact, pews were tossed around but largely undamaged and, apart from a few splintered sections, the timber ceiling appeared to have simply shrugged and flexed on its elegant columns." I've copied what was said in a news broadcast, Ann
@maggiemae Oh Maggie it makes me heartsick thinking about those gorgeous windows! And it sounds like some of the damage could have been avoided if they'd realized the extent of the initial damage in September. So sad...
a stark reminder of natures wrath. It is sad to see the remnants of a structure that was once glorious and now lost. I'm sure being there in person made it that much more palpaple
Oh, how sad. The monochrome tones work so well with this shot highlighting a somber, eerie feel. I hope the church will eventually be restored to its original beauty.
