He is a sweet little ginger male looking for a home in a few weeks! This is at the SPCA where I volunteer on Thursdays. They get plenty of love and attention here - warmth, food, care and cleanliness.
In my mother’s journal written in 1929, she has been to Bath, no bath but only a bath bun, then to Wells where she described the famous Cathedral. The Vicars Close, the Bishop’s Palace, the Retrochoir (never heard of it but it is called that), the Chapter House and the Lady Chapel
Then on to Cheddar where she loved going through the Gorge and eating the cheese. She says: “High rocks on both sides of us making us feel absolutely miniature – down, down , round a steep bend and there we were in the little village of Cheddar. It’s quaint, nice to stay in but to live? Little sun will get to it in the winter, my goodness! We put up at a wee cottage the Rose Cottage – a candle upstairs in a small room but electric light downstairs. We went for a short walk then back to write up diary and so to bed.”
Down through Watersmeet, Lynmouth, where I was so interested in what she described. She said it was some sort of car, “The car is hitched up at the bottom end and is somehow weighted with water which has to be released when the things starts. I wasn’t too keen on it but Louie rather enjoyed it.”
I eventually discovered that it is a water powered Funicular railcar built in 1898 and – Google says- “Water feeds through 5-inch (127 mm) pipes from the West Lyn River — over a mile away — into tanks under the floor of the upper car. Each car has a 700-imperial-gallon (3,182 L; 841 US gal) tank mounted between the wheels. Water is discharged from the lower car, until the heavier top car begins to descend, with the speed controlled by a brakeman traveling on each car”
An amusing bit I came to near the end of my dictation for the day – in Cloverly – “At the foot of a hill where the road forked, we were directed up the hill by a traffic man and found ourselves at a huge open place where we entered in to an argument with the man. We wanted to leave our car outside while we found digs but he wanted us to put it inside. I said, “I wasn’t going to pay for parking fees and we would only be a few minutes” he said he didn’t take any notice of that which made me cross but he explained that of course we wouldn’t know what motorists were, for we were Colonials, - thought us Australians!
Oh I would soooo pick you!! You're such a sweetie! So lovely of you to volunteer at the SPCA! If I worked there I would have 100 cats.... :) Very interesting journal page! Sounds like a very cool car! :)
@yonnie Hi Yvonne! Mum shot through Oxford in 2 days ( I know she comes back there though) and down to the South fairly quickly, not sure why but will probably find out) Then it is as above.
Oh cute little kitty- I could play with you at the SPCA but I can't bring you home. Poor Mr. LeFevre is highly allergic to cats! Adorable picture and another great adventure from your mother's journal!
more wonderfully articulated description from your mum's journal Maggie, always love to read those snippets...Oh! and, of course, the pic is fab too - the processing is fab here. x
She's such a cutie! I'd love to give her a home! :)
Fascinating detail in your mum's journal - love the last paragraph. What's happened to your aunt's (Louie?) diary?
Your commentary is so interesting and I'm really enjoying hearing of the places I live near to and have visited on many occasions. Sweet little cat. It has an almost human expression! xx
