The South African War Memorial (or 'Boer War', to most locals) was unveiled in Thames Street, Oamaru, by Governor Lord Plunket on 2 February 1905. Many young North Otago men had volunteered to fight for the Empire, and Oamaru had shipped thousands of tonnes of grain to the Cape to sustain the imperial army's horses.
I stood below this and created my impression of what valiant effort went on here! I did play with the background.
Three good things:
1. My St Lukes Church Steeple took me to PP which was so good - the weather did the hard work!
2. Started to dig the veggie garden and now, as usual I’ve got cannon fire in my lower back! Good thing - voltaren works!
3. So sad about Cilla but thankful that her songs live on forever
I do love all the negative space surrounding the subject and your processing has added poignancy and magic. A lovely result. We have a Boer war memorial in Motueka for the one and only citizen that lost their life in that conflict http://365project.org/snaphappi/365/2014-07-27
Now that I have seen your image I will go back one day and try and do better. (Sorry about that previous post.)
@snaphappi Thanks Maggie! It is such a long time ago even before the First World War so good to have a strong memorial. Your one sounds good being a bird bath too!
How interesting! I didn't know there were any "Boer War" monuments in NZ, neither that you sent provisions for the Brit army. The things one learns on 365!
A lovely pov and capture . and a beautiful light on he soldier ! Such an educational trip in 365 -- history was never my strong point -- facts and figures of the past never seemed to stick with me !!!
Love that he's center of attraction in the lighting and very interesting information about him!! For some reason he reminds me of our Teddy Roosevelt. We have a lot of statues of him hunting!! Not usually with that much ammo though!! LOL Great capture! FAV!
Beautiful light you caught here maggiemae...you can just imagine lying on the ground & this happy standing over you with his gun pointing! As it happens four of us have arranged to go to Liverpool on Thursday......yes very sad about Cilla...our era!
Wonderful processing! Obviously, not familiar with that part of your history, but have seen many war memorials, sometimes even to honor things that I would not approve of!
