There are 5 such large trees in my front yard and many more in the back. They are all full of balls like this one! This one is on the right front side of the house. The spiney balls are known to kill lawn mowers in various ways. They all have to be raked up and discarded before mowing season begins.
@princesicita Thank you, Princess! I think they're a "southeastern US" tree mostly. They're mostly a nuisance tree around here with their spiney balls and limbs that get some kind of blight, then die and fall all over the yard. But, they are shade from the heat in the summer and the balls do have some amazing uses in crafts. =)
@kerristephens Aww, it's not a great comp but, several folks have asked me about the sweet gum tree and its spiney balls. Thank you so much for the comment!
Beautiful shot and angle of the Sweet Gum! Love those "twisty" branches against the blue sky. Amazing how such beauty can be such a pain to care for . . all of that raking, etc. But it's worth it for the shade AND the crafts! :)
wow really cool looking all the branches against the sky - i really like how this looks. and i've never heard of this tree before so interesting to see!
@laurentye I don't think you've missed much! LOL! Be glad you've missed stepping on one of those balls barefooted which really hurts! Thank you so much for your comments, Lauren! =)
