This is a non-native wildflower from southern Asia, but it grows WILD all over the southeastern USA. It will continue to grow and bloom throughout the summer on its long graceful and sturdy stem. It will form seed pods in the fall and the loose seeds inside will rattle in the wind, sounding just like a rattlesnake!
Got the front yard mowed yesterday. Took me nearly all day in the heat and humidity. It's about the size of three of my backyards. I was exhausted and fried when I finished. Thus, I am behind again here. Will catch up on your pics as quick as I can!
@cdonohoue Thank you so much, Cathy! They're in the legume family but, they are poisonous to wild life, which explains why I've never seen them eaten any where at any stage in their life span.
@skipt07 Thank you, Skip! Appreciate your very kind comments and visit! Always appreciated!
I've never seen these before. They are so unusual as well as beautiful. I can't even imagine mowing the lawn in this heat. Aren't there any young boys in your area that mow cheap? Cheep, cheep....probably not any more ... just being silly, got that from my Dad ;-)
Gorgeous flower, Maggie ... have never seen one before. Very lovely color and beautiful markings on there. You sure did push yourself in that heat, girlfriend. You need a "little help from your friends!" Too bad that all of us here on 365 can't come over and lend a hand. It'd be done in no time. Don't worry about catching up.
@cimes1 Thank you for your lovely comments, Carole! A couple of summers ago, when I still had a job, I tried to find a teenager who might help me one half day on Saturdays with my yard work. I know lots of folks with teenage boys, but none were willing to come help an old middle-aged woman in with her chores. I just do the best I can and I try to take it easy so I don't get over heated.
@vernabeth You are very kind, Beth! Thank you so much for your lovely comments and visit!
@karenann Thank you for your wonderful comments, Karen! Very much appreciated! I have some friends but they are so busy with their own problems, yard work and lives that I don't bother them or ask any more. I get it done in time. =)

@cmc1200 Thank you for your sweet comments, Caryn! Most appreciated!
@papalima Thank you, Patti! If you find some, wait until it's got the seed pods and just save those to plant in late spring. It won't transplant very well.
What a gorgeous photo, Maggie. I love the color and the detail about this wildflower. How interesting. FAV Sorry it is still hot and humid there. I do not know how you deal with it. We get a few days of hot, over 100 and I am spent on the 1st day and not out mowing my yard that is the size of yours. We will cool to the 90's in a few days.
