Butterfly in black and white... by marlboromaam

Butterfly in black and white...

This was converted to black and white. I am really seeing a big difference in shooting in black and white vs. converting. So much better to shoot in black and white than to convert for so many reasons!
Beautiful composition and light! Love the b&w!

Ok you have convinced me to try it. Just beautiful!!
August 8th, 2012
Ah...but it still looks lovely...:)

This is wonderful! I love the contrast you caught in the black and white colors!

Love it in b&w! Fav

I have had so much black and white in life, that I really like the color. However, this just seems to work. I like the detail and POV in this.

This looks pretty good converted to me. I will have to try to compare sometime. Thanks for the tip.

You'd know! Very nice photo here.
August 8th, 2012
That's interesting to know! In this photo you can see the design on the wings so clearly - takes dominance!
August 8th, 2012
Interesting choice too. Most people would resist the urge to shoot something as naturally colorful as a butterfly in b&w. Me likey.
August 8th, 2012
Really nice B&W, great closeup!
August 8th, 2012
It's amazing how you can really see so many different shades here. Great job.
August 8th, 2012
Great b/w Maggie!! So, why do you feel there is a big difference between converting and not? I had heard that shooting in b/w you didn't get the wide range of greys.
August 8th, 2012
Gorgeous shot. Love the detail brought out by the b&w.
August 8th, 2012
I think it looks great. Like Yvonne said, the pattern on the wings really comes out. So do you have a way to zero out saturation before shooting or how do you shoot in black & white?

@amandalomonaco Thank you, Amanda! The number one thing about shooting in black and white mode... you can see the contrast or lack of it! Thus, you'll take a better shot!

@danette Thank you very much, Danette!

@maggiemae Thank you, Maggiemae! Appreciate your kind comments!

@cromwell LOL! Thank you, Cromwell! Really appreciate your remarks and the visit!

@rockinrobyn Thank you very much, Robyn! I simply change my settings from "natural color" to "black and white" and everything in the viewfinder is also black and white, so I can see if my shot has decent contrast or not!

@kdei Thank you so much, Kim!

@carolinedreams Thank you very much, Caroline!

Wow, really, someone told me it is always better to convert it in post processing. This is awesome!!
August 8th, 2012
@myhrhelper Thank you, Kathy! The only reason to shoot color and convert to black and white, is simply to have the color version if you changed your mind. When you shoot in black and white, that's what you've got. But, it forces you to take better photos!

The majority of my b&w shots are done through the camera, I haven't converted many I am not that experienced with editting. This is absolutely gorgeous, fav

August 10th, 2012
@vickisfotos Thank you, Vicki! Appreciate your comments!
August 10th, 2012
it's not often we see natural history shots in monochrome maggie, but this really does work well......interesting that you shoot in B/W rather than convert...i always convert !!
August 11th, 2012
@phil_howcroft You are too kind, Phil! Thank you! This shot was converted but, I really do prefer to shoot black and white in black and white mode. I can see the contrast in my composition much more easily and it forces me to take a better pic than if I just thought I "might" convert it later.
