Since there were no face to face events planned here in Manhattan for Wales Week, there was no need for the massive quantities of Welsh cakes that we made last year. Nevertheless, WE wanted to eat some Welsh cakes and the dinosaurs, whose help was greatly appreciated last year, knew how to make them. So we weren't immediately alarmed when a group of them headed to the kitchen to begin making a batch. Eventually, the dinosaurs were joined by the pigs -- Mochyn, Maiale, and Porc Cousteau, after they tired of researching Welsh pigs and the swine industry in Wales (more on this later).
It did not occur to us that the inclusion of the pigs in the Welsh cake making was NOT a good idea. That was a mistake we won't make twice. Pigs are intelligent, brave, polite, and have amazing gymnastic skills when playing the game of Pigmania (Pass the Pigs). But they are not suited to be kitchen assistants. When we looked in on them later, what we found was a disaster. No organization, no one in charge, flour, sugar, and currants everywhere but where they should have been! We kicked everyone -- pigs, dinos, Neanderthals included -- out of the kitchen, and finished making the Welsh cakes ourselves.
We hope you have had a wonderful St. David's Day. At our house everyone gathered at the table, set for tea with Welsh cakes all around. Before tucking into the Welsh cakes, the dinosaurs and pigs agreed to pose for a photo, commemorating the occasion. I put up the tripod and took multiple photos, adjusting ISO and shutter speed. I was very proud of myself for using the tripod — something I hate to fiddle with and usually avoid. But since it was already after dark outside, so there was no extra light coming in the window, it enabled me to use a longer shutter speed and lower ISO. To their credit and my great relief, the dinosaurs were very patient with me. I couldn’t have asked for a better St. David’s Day gift!
What a delightful story -- but I am sure the Welsh dragon would not appreciate finding the dinosaurs and pigs meddling in the making of the Welsh Cakes - there would be some fierce flames of fire ,I am sure -- ha !!

An absolutely lovely set up for the day! I have to make my welsh cakes tomorrow for our game. It will not be nearly as exciting in my kitchen as it was in yours!
@beryl Beryl, i’m sure you’re absolutely right. Y Ddraig Goch would not be pleased to see the disorderly way the dino/pig contingent approached the making of Welsh cakes. (I shudder to think of what they would do with Bara Brith!) but in the end I imagine he would sit down with all of us and enjoy the eating of the Welsh cakes. Why did I not think to invite him!?
I've never heard of St David's Day but your way of celebrating it seems so fun that I'd like to join in on such a celebration. Beautiful dishes, too -- and those Welsh cakes look so yummy.
