When the five Spare Wise Men finished looking at the story in the Ideals issue (and pointing out it was too flat to be an authentic portrayal) I showed them something else I had spotted in that same issue. It was a piece showing Nativity sets from all around the world—each different than the others. They really enjoyed seeing that. Then I got the idea of showing them a Nativity triptych I made a bunch of years ago for my folks. Well, actually, I got my dad to do the woodwork and then I decorated it with woodburning and paint and a few wooden trees from a kid’s set.
In the center is a photo taken even more ages ago when my siblings and I were kids. We were presenting the Christmas story in my Grandma’s apartment in Salina. I played Mary, my brother John was St Joseph, my sister Barb was the angel of the Lord, and brother Pat was a shepherd. I can see a ‘sheep’ in his arms—not sure if it was that species, but we’ll assume it was. I don’t remember the details, but my mom says when it was time for the baby Jesus to be born, I reached under Grandma’s dining room table and pulled him out. Can you see how tenderly and reverently I’m holding him?
Anticipating the “It’s flat”’criticism, I pointed out that I knew it was essentially flat, but it was standing up. Ha! Got ‘em there! They had to admit it was behaving three dimensionally.
The tour is turning into a Christmas tour. I think I’ll widen our horizons for the end of the week.
@tdaug80 I promise the last two will not be more Christmas decorations! For two reasons, actually. The first is that’s about all I’ve put up so far, except for the Advent wreath. The second reason is we need more variety in the tour.
Impressive looking triptych to start with and how special to have a nativity that you are part of in that photograph. One of the favorite nativities that I have is one where my daughter and son-in-law and new granddaughter are portraying the holy family.
Hello, I noticed you use the Canon Rebel T6. As your get pushed partner I challenge you to use the Fish Eye effect in your camera. It might be fun with all the Christmas decorations.
