What a beautiful photo of this heron. He is hanging out at his favorite spot! Just the way we like to sit in a park, perhaps. Nice detail in his feathers.
@sansjuan No, don't think so. People tell me that's the way they rest or keep one leg warm - just draw it up. I got several pictures today of different birds standing on just one leg - hadn't noticed that before.

Their legs don't have any padding, so the blood vessels are very close to the surface and so their legs lose heat very quickly which is why they do this, alternating legs, to keep them as warm as possible. @sansjuan
