Photographic quality negative - but butterfly sighting positive! This Mourning Cloak is the first butterfly to be spotted this year. Would have been nice to have landed in a more scenic spot - but - maybe next time.
Oooooooooooop my favorite! I love and raise monarchs but these are my fav.they overwinter as butterflies in forests and nectar on tree sap among other woodland things so they are never in colorful settings.fav!
I love Mourning Cloaks too, and when I have seen one they have been on the ground like this. I am happy that you shared this despite your reservations about the photographic quality. His yellow edge shimmers like gold leaf!
@kathysview I'm thinking I'm going to have to replant the lantana, too - it's not showing any sign of life. Hoping my butterfly bush made it. It is getting some new leaves.
Your first sighting of the season and a new-to-me one! Great catch.
If your butterfly bush is a buddleia it should be fine, they're as tough as old boots. I've seen those grow out of cracks in old window ledges a couple of storeys up!
