The Merkið ("The Mark") is a Nordic cross flag which was first used on 22 June 1919. Since 1940 it has been used officially. It is permitted to fly the flag privately in the other Nordic countries. On April 25, the Faroese celebrate their flag, Merkið. People's meetings are held all over the Faroe Islands on this day, where the Faroese come together to celebrate their flag. You typically hear a flag speech and sing e.g. the flag song "Sjá tú blánar" (directly translated: "See you turn blue"). The original version of Merkið hangs in the church in the settlement of Fámjin on the island of Suðuroy.
