I took this shot quite some time ago but would appreciate constructive feedback on it from anyone who has the time. We have a Nature/Natural History theme coming up at our camera club and I wondered if this would be suitable or a bit too macabre?
(FYI the magpie swallowed the mouse whole just after I took this shot!)
For what it's worth I think it's fabulous! I don't know about macabre - it's just the way magpies are. Love the focus and detail - that eye is wonderful.
Great timing. Usually by the time I have spotted it the bird would have swallowed it! I don't have a problem at all with the subject matter and in fact I wonder if a tighter crop around the head and beak to emphasise the plight of the mouse and hold of the magpie.
I definitely think you should enter this at Camera Club. I doubt anyone else has a shot like it, and it's always nice to have these different shots in there. It captures nature perfectly.
I think this is a great natural history shot and wouldn't think twice myself about entering it. Fav

@tristansmum@sdutoit@bkbinthecity@paulaw Thank you all very much for your comments and feedback. Looks like this one is a "goer" :) Fingers crossed that the judge likes it as much as people on 365 do.
Great clear shot!
I think it suitable to enter - this is what happens in nature. All creatures need to eat & birds don't do supermarkets haha !
It is a wonderful image. I would be proud to enter it if it was mine. Go for it!

@bluerose15 Thanks for the suggestion of the crop. I tried it but it lost some of the sharpness so I think I ought to leave it as it is.
@rickster549 Lol, of course it is! Thanks Rick.
@gamelee Thanks Lee. I guess I found this a bit odd because I didn't know magpies ate mice - but then again I hadn't really thought about what they ate at all! It seems more “right” somehow that a hawk is eating a bird. Great shot btw.
